Preparation seminar for the World camp in Congo
Posted 17–6–2006 by Sebastiaan

During the last weekend of May, all European participants for the world camp had a preparation seminar in Bruges (Belgium). The goals for these few days were various: to get to know the other participants; to have the first contact with Congolese culture; to get to know more about the country and about the organisation. Other participants from Fimcap were present, apart from those taking part in World Camp. Thus one of the important aspects was the acquisition of experiences in intercultural com...

News from Pretoria, from Xaveri South Africa
Posted 17–6–2006 by Sebastiaan

"We members of Xaveri Movement South Africa, are experiencing great blessing in our work with children, youth, immigrants and refugees".
The movement is working on two projects for community development.
The year theme for 2006 is “To love the city with God’s love”. This is exactly what we do: reflecting God’s love in hundreds of ways and loving the city back through life and beauty. A city that is not loved withers away until it becomes a cold soulless place where nobody dares to go. A city ...

Dear Friends,

We are happy to greet you from the Southern part of the world.
The groups have again started their activities. Local camps took place in January all over the country. The distances in Chile are enormous for a movement that counts 41 groups in 11 dioceses. Last February, group leaders started with preparations for a new challenge for the year 2006 - "¡AQUÍ ESTOY! DEMOS A JUPACH SU COLOR.": "Here I am, and let’s give Jupach its colour".
This invitation was sent personally ...

Award for ZAK, Malta
Posted 17–6–2006 by Sebastiaan

Last April ZAK were one of 5 groups who were shortlisted to be awarded the National Youth Recognition award for the year 2005. Some ZAK members went for the social evening that was organised and we were very pleased when it was announced that we had won the award. The first comments were of gratitude to God for the opportunity to work with the young people of Malta. It was a very nice feeling within us to know that the work we are doing is being recognised. The award is given to an organisation ...

News of CYO Ghana
Posted 19–12–2005 by Jeroen

The Ghana CYO has just finished a twin National Programme in August 2005. The programme was very hectic in all aspects but by the grace of God, it all went well and enhanced the image of the organisation. We wish to thank all our friends and benefactors in and out of Ghana for their support in diverse ways.

The first was the 43rd national CYO Management Council Meeting for four full days on the theme "We have come to worship Him". It was attended by over 60 delegates, National and diocesan officers including chaplains and Observers from Catholic Youth Council and Crusaders.

As usual, the main business was reports from the different secretariats, financial statements, budgets and programme for 2005-2006.

Fimcap day
Posted 17–11–2005 by Jeroen

On November 20 all Fimcap member organisations celebrate the Fimcap day and pray for all the children and the young people in the whole world, especially for the children and the leaders who share the Fimcap spirit.

Fimcap is growing,
With the newcomers who are welcome, whatever origin, colour or way of doing they have,
Our languages are different but our culture is similar,
Beyond differences, we all share the same things:
We have been created to God’s image,
And he offers us his protection.
Very dear Father of all children.
Open your arms widely,
To welcome us all.
Holy Spirit, be with us, when anxiety and sorrow is afflicting us.
Jesus Christ, come and help us through the grace of your love,
Whatever colour, race or ways of doing which we have
The Lord loves us; he is caring and waiting for us all.
Amen.

World Camp 2006
Posted 30–10–2005 by Jeroen

Due to the preparation work of the World Camp which will take place in Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo 06 - 26 August 2006, three members of the Fimcap presidium stayed some days in Lubumbashi.

13 - 22 July, the Fimcap General Secretary also participated at the Kiro national Camp that took place in Kamina, about 700 km of Lubumbashi, in the North of Katanga.

Carme and Alveiro, Fimcap president and Fimcap international chaplain arrived on the 21st of July and visited on 22-24 July some of local projects that will host the participants of the world camp.

These projects are social projects, e.g. supervision houses for homeless children run by Salesian fathers of Don Bosco and lay people from Lubumbashi, a supervision house for mentally handicapped children led by a lady, a house for re-education for physically handicapped people, and a nutrition centre for children suffering of malnutrition. More details will be given in the next Link editions.

Living with the wind and the sun
Posted 30–10–2005 by Jeroen

Amahoro! May peace be with you? Here in Burundi, you greet people with these words. A meaningful gesture in a country which suffered so many violent conflicts. I have been hosted for two months by Chiro Burundi as volunteer from Broederlijk Delen in order to support the projects of boys and girls of Chiro Burundi. My long experience of the Chiro movement in Flanders was an ideal basis for an enriching exchange from culture to culture, from organisation to organisation and from people to people. I was very surprised to see the importance of the movement and its impact in spite of the poor financial support.

The Chiro movement is a well respected organisation with a large social network of members, of leaders, of former members and numerous supporters. It is an organisation of the Catholic Action engaging itself for the poorest. Their motto is in fact: “Play, work and pray”.

In memoriam: Jef Van den Audenaerde
Posted 24–8–2005 by Jeroen

Dear Jef Van den AudenaerdeFimcap member,

We are sad to inform you that Jef Van den Audenaerde has died.

Jef was for many years the Fimcap secretary, the last years he was the financial auditor for Fimcap. He was a great inspirator for our federation. Solidarity with people and organisations in the South, and good personal contacts with people and organisations all over the world were his motivation and strength.
Maybe you had the opportunity to work with him.
Jef was also for 25 years the director of Chiro Flanders.

The funeral will be on august 26th at 10 AM in the cathedral of Antwerp (Belgium).

We will miss him!

We hope you can pass this message to the people who worked with him (delegates and responsables for international contacts from the early seventies till late nineties).
Maybe you can also remember him in your prayers.

The Fimcap presidium
and family Van den Audenaerde

Easter Course - Transylvania, Romania
Posted 6–7–2005 by Sebastiaan

50 people from 9 countries (Transylvania [Romania], Hungary, UK, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine - and Malta!): That is what the Easter Course was made up of - and of course a lot of energy and sharing. This was what made up one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life.
Easter Course is an activity organised each year by the European Fellowship, of which Fimcap is a sister organisation. This year, it was my turn to go, together with Stephen from ZAK Malta.
Easter Course ...

Ghana CYO
Posted 6–7–2005 by Sebastiaan

After a whole year and before the rain starts again we have been able to re-roof the Ghana CYO Centre which has been ripped off, mainly with the support of Chiro Belgium and other friends from Switzerland, a few local people and some CYO members.
By doing this, we have been able to save the building from further decline. However not all is fully ready for use in order to enable us carry on with the work of the organisation.
We are now working on the cracked walls with the little money we still...

WYD: The "Bureaucracy" behind
Posted 6–7–2005 by Sebastiaan

Currently, about 400 000 young people are expected to come to Cologne on the 13th of August to celebrate the XXth World Youth Days. This mega-event requires great organisational and logistic resources. Here is a report from the WYD-office in Cologne,
where the two main responsible persons are Father Ulrich Hennes and Father Georg Austen.
There are nearly 140 full time volunteers who are preparing for WYD. Together with about 70 professionals they are working in offices on four bureau floors wi...

From 28th April to 2nd of May, the intercontinental presidium met in Rome to make official visits to the Council of Laity (CCPL), the Council for the Christian Unity and the first and the second sections of the Secretariat of State.
Probably many of you are asking yourself: Why does Fimcap has such visits? Are these visits important for us? Fimcap as an International Catholic Organisation should meet every three years with the most important dicasteries in the Roman Curia, regarding our catholi...

New opportunities for youth leaders wanting international leader training
Posted 6–5–2005 by Sebastiaan

EuroCLass logo A more flexible EuroCLass is being offered to FIMCAP youth leaders the coming year. More European travel, higher flexibility concerning time and commitment as well as new projects is the result of a restructuring of EuroClass. FIMCAP organisations and participating youth leaders have recommended improvements on the basis of the past four years experiences.
EuroCLass is now open to youth leaders who wish to participate for a shorter period than the full project period. Hopefully youth leaders wi...

What is the relationship between Italian oratories and FIMCAP or the several different European and non European organisations which work for and with children during their leisure time? What are the concrete medium- and long-term benefits that make noteworthy the commitment and the work in this direction?
In an effort to take up the challenge of a greater openness to the European contacts and to get to know more about European and world youth organisations, the General Secretariat of FOI decid...

Habemus Papam!
Posted 21–4–2005 by Jeroen

The Cardinals have elected Joseph Ratzinger as Pope. He takes the name Pope Benedict XVI.
Fimcap prays for him and thanks God for giving us Pope Benedict XVI.

In his message in the mass of the Sixtine Chapel he dedicated some words to the youth:

"I am particularly thinking of young people. To them, the privileged interlocutors of John Paul II, I send an affectionate embrace in the hope, God willing, of meeting them at Cologne on the occasion of the next World Youth Day. With you, dear young people, I will continue to maintain a dialogue, listening to your expectations in an attempt to help you meet ever more profoundly the living, ever young, Christ."

Pope John Paul II
Posted 5–4–2005 by Jeroen

Pope John Paul II died on 2 April 2005. The world has lost a great personality, the young people have lost a friend. In his first encyclic "Redemptor hominis" (March 1979) he encouraged the youth of the world to take up responsibilty in Church and society. In all meetings with young people he asked them to work for a new civilisation of love and justice. Pope John Paul II managed to motivate young people for the Church in a period of lack of orientation. His social commitment, his political acting and charitable work impressed the young generation.and so many others all over the world.
Let us pray and thank God for this great example.

EuroClass - in Denmark or the best possibility to spend a year!!!
Posted 11–1–2005 by Jeroen

The basicEuroclass idea is to spend one or two semesters after secondary school or professional training in a kind of informal training centre called Hojskole. There are many subjects like theatre, sport, music, art, outdoor life, pedagogy, swimming or just... EuroClass! You learn what you want and how you want: The many different choices give you the opportunity to try out new things and to discover new talents. All students and even some teachers with their family all live in the same house, which increases social competencies.

More important is the fact that you quickly find good friends and it is nice to have feasts together. Euroclass gathers group leaders from all over Europe. The training courses are in English and the whole project takes about nine months, divided in three parts. You first spend 4 ½ months in the Danish Hojskole and work on different subjects like Project management, Intercultural learning Pedagogy, Fundraising, and a lot more. After Christmas, you get the possibility to go for practice in a foreign youth organisation during three months . You can try out what you have learned, make new experiences and discover a new country. Afterwards, you come back for six weeks to evaluate the practical part and to start the final project.

This is the formal information, but there is so much more. I was there from august 2003 up to May 2004 and I am still so enthusiastic about the project. There were 9 different nationalities: Denmark, Belgium, Ukraine, Transylvania, Hungary, Slovakia, Estonia, Philippines and Germany. Intercultural learning is just happening while living together, by telling stories, having feasts, and by doing the funny things together when you are with friends. You get to know their cultural context. Some daily details may brings endless discussions, for instance the way of washing the dishes. You can not imagine how different it can be in another country!

The explanation of the game, the cards needed to play the game, the prayer and the world map are now available on the Fimcap website from the beginning of November. It will also be sent to all national secretariats.
