Genug geschafft Posted 18–7–2003 by Corno
Videoke Posted 18–7–2003 by Corno
Hi,
Tomorrow we will leave again for another city. Our projects will have ended by then. Time passes by too quickly.
The last few days we have been working on our project, here in Nueva Biskaya. The first day we went counting trees. Almost all the forests here have been sold out to big logging companies. The cut all the big trees and left a barren place. The erosion of the soil is an enormous threat to the ecological balance of this region. It could turn into a desert if nobody would take action.
Fortunately the government in this region is aware of this problem and launched an enormous reforestation programme. Our project here in Nueva Biskaya is also part of that programme. We were counting trees for the inventory. The different funds that support the programme want to have a detailed account of the number of trees planted, surviving etc.
Another two days we went planting trees on one of the barren mountains. The first day we planted mahoganey, nara and rotan trees. The second day we planted three hectares of coconut trees. That was really hard work because the soil was very hard and difficult to work on. Of course it is still extremely hot so our workingtempo is not at its best.
Today we planted little seedlings in a bigger place. So they will have more room to grow and can be planted in a few years. Ass always it turns out to be very difficult to work together with people from different cultures. A lot of misunderstandings occur but this is part of the intercultural exchange. Fortunately we can laugh about it. And that we do a lot.
The weather has been quite good so far. In the newspaper we read that the people on Cebu must have had enormous tropical rainfall for several days. The weather there was really terrible. I am so excited to see them again in a few days. So we can exchange experiences.
The people here seem to be very interested in our marital status. Most of us are single and that seems to be a very interested topic. When we went to the governer of Nueva Biskaya. We had to appear on stage one by one in front of all the government employees, several hundreds of them, and they asked us whether we are single or not and negotiable. I wonder what they expect from us.
I have been very lucky in my project. And also in my hosting family. Onel wants to bring us to a videoke bar every afternoon. While most of the participants have to spent time indoors, Emmanuel and I spend all our evenings in bars and sing videoke. It is really no exageration to state that there are videoke bars on every streetcorner. And everybody loves to sing and perform. The shows they have put on for us were all very spectacular.
Well I think this is enough for now, see you next time!!

 Hi everyone,
I'm in Neuve Viscaya in the Philippines now and I'm having a great time hear. If you once have the opportunity to go on a worldcamp, please take it. The people here are very nice to us. Everyone tries to help and is very kind. I allready met a lot of nice Philipino people. I'm sure I'll never forget this nice camp here. Today , we're even interviewed for the local television. We will watch that within 45 minutes, I'm curious.
Tomorow and the next 3 days we're going to plant trees here, on the mountains. I wonder how this will be.
But I'll leave you now and I hope you enjoyed to read this little repport.

Hello... Posted 14–7–2003 by Corno
Mi name is Jorge Bravo, and NO speaking English.
Never mind the heat!! Posted 14–7–2003 by Corno
Greatings from the Philippines!!
It is great here in the Philippines. The hospitality is in one word overwhelming. Just for that is was worth the trip and all the effort to get there.
We are already here for one week. And right now the group is split up in four groups. My group is in Nueva Viskaya, about 250 kilometers north of Manila. It is a beautifull green and mountainous area. Not like Manila that is a very busy and chaotic city. And chaotic is an understatement. Believe me. The traffic is a mess and the pollution is horrible. After I came home from a walk on a hill in the city I immediately brushed my teeth.
But this was only one of the smaller setbacks. It is so great here and there are so many things to tell, that I just don't know where to start.
The Chiro Phillipines has organised many beautifull presentations of their activities, their country and their foods and drinks. The presentations were enormously spectacular. There was one presentation that was really great. The players wore white gloves and black clothes. With the blacklight this made a very nice presentation because with their hands they formed all kinds of figures with wich they illustrated their story.
We could also practice several Chiro games. We danced a typical Philipinen dance. They took two large bamboo sticks and held them horizontally next to each other on the floor. In a certain rithm they slapped the two bamboo sticks together. The idea is to step in between the sticks and not to get your foot caught between the sticks. Only when you can follow the rithm this is not a problem.
For me, coming from the Netherlands, it is very difficult to get accostumed to the heat. Even sitting down in the shadow is too much. You'll start transpiring. Everybody does. Only airconditioned rooms are bearable. But never mind. There are too many good other things to do.
I hope to be able to send more messages next time.
A lot of Fimcap greetings!!!
