SMS-rail 2004

Project

The SMS-rail 2004 is an offer for young people who would like both to go on interrail and, at the same time, to meet new friends from all over Europe. 15 children- and youth organisations are creating a cross-border cooperation in the summer 2004. From the 2nd of July to the 1st of August there will be free sleeping quarters – shelters and food (partly) provided by the organisations, competitions/missions to fulfil, and last but not least: fellowship with other groups of youngsters participating in the same rail.

To participate you have to be a member of an organisation, which is a member of the Fimcap European Fellowship (click here to see the list of organisations participating).

To participate you have to be a member of a team. The team can consist of young people from a local circle, but you also have got an opportunity to go beyond the common structure. Just use your imagination. Each team must have a team leader who is more than 18 years old; this point is absolutely necessary to join the rail. A team consists of five to seven persons from the age of 16 to 23 years.

Imagine…

A group of youngsters from your organisation has left home with backpacks stuffed with clothes, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and some euros. They are going to join the "SMS-rail event" – an adventure by train all over Europe, and they have planned to do so for months.

They carry a one-month train ticket, and every day they have to fulfil exiting tasks in various countries, and sometimes they will visit a post hosted by different organisations.
Four days ago they went to Barcelona where the Catalonian member organisation from FIMCAP had arranged volley at the beach, and afterwards they joined the midnight Mass at the Cathedral. Earlier on the trip they went to Paris where they found a post located under the Eiffel-Tower. Then they went on a tour in the Jewish part of the city. In Transylvania they visited a local youth organisation in a village where they slept at haylofts and were hosted by local families. They fulfilled another post by arranging activities for the children in this village.

Beep…beep…new SMS:

Take the train from Munich to
Belgrade and leave the train
at Zagreb tomorrow afternoon.
Meet at coffee café at the
railway station at five o'clock.

The group of youngsters had just planned to go to Denmark for the FDF Festival, but now another appeared – what would they choose?

Practical information

Economy

In principle there is no participation fee. However, you and your team need to buy an interrail ticket (some organisations will financially support part of the ticket – contact your national coordinator for more info). During your travel around Europe you will get the possibility to stay at different shelters, where dinner will be served. In addition each participant ought to carry money for food at the rail and pocket money. Mobile costs also have to be covered by the team itself.

Bring

Each team has to carry at least one mobile phone and a tent. Moreover, sleeping bag and underlay. More information will be provided in the spring.

When

From the 2nd of July to the 1st of August 2004. A team can choose to participate the entire month, but it is also possible to join for reduced days, though 9 are the minimum number. During July different periods will occur. The middle period of SMS-rail from July 12th to July 21st will be filled with a high impact of missions, shelters, and questions, which means that you will be in a competition against the other teams about points. During the low impact periods July 2nd to July 11th and from July 22nd to August 1st there will be only a few missions and competitions.
